Condell Park Bible Church was founded in the June of 1938. That was a long time ago, yet Jesus Christ is "the same yesterday and forever" (Hebrews 13:8), and people are still the same. We are still sinners, and Jesus still saves.

During 2021 we celebrate 83 years of sharing the good news about Jesus Christ.

The Founding

During the 1930's the Condell Park Presbyterian Church was led by a faithful layman named R. J. Henderson who moved into the Bankstown area during the 1920’s. “Jim” was burdened because of the possible closure of the church and was given responsibility for the work.

In 1938 a Presbyterian minister by the name of Reverend McAllister moved into the Bankstown Presbyterian Parish and was appointed Minister of the church. He had trained under the liberal theologian, Doctor Samuel Angus.

Reverend McAllister held some unorthodox views. He denied several fundamental Bible doctrines, namely, the inspiration and authority of Scriptures, the Virgin Birth, and the Deity of Christ.

His heretical views were offensive to many people in the congregation. The church elders made several attempts to convince Reverend McAllister of his errors, but to no avail.

During the morning service on June 19th, 1938, Reverend McAllister made a statement to the effect, "I don't know why Jesus had to die for me; I'm not a sinner." The church secretary, Mr Lake, rose to his feet, graciously stated that he could not agree with such a notion, and walked out of the meeting followed by a number of the congregation. Most of these people never returned.

It was determined during the following week that the group of "protestors" would begin meeting in the local Progress Hall, and, on June 26th, 1938, the first gathering was held.

The work grew and strengthened and constituted in the same year as the Condell Park Gospel Mission. By April 1939, a block of ground was purchased in Lancelot Street, upon which a meeting hall was erected. Upon the ridge cap a neon sign was fitted; every night its message was clear for all to see: "Jesus Saves."

Although it has been extensively altered, this building remains the church auditorium to the present day. The neon sign is gone, but the same message is now emblazoned on the front of the church; it is proclaimed from the pulpit every Sunday; it is central to every ministry we conduct; it is the best news anyone could ever hear - Jesus Saves!

The Early Years

For the next 15 years, the work continued to grow under the leadership of Mr Henderson, ably assisted by the church elders.

In 1954, it was decided that a full-time pastor was needed and Mr Ben Ewing was appointed as the church’s first pastor. The Mission was also constituted as a church during this year and became known as The Peoples Church, Condell Park.

From 1964 the church was under the leadership of the Elder and Church Secretary, George Jeffress, who was appointed as Administrator until Mr Ken Amery was appointed as pastor in 1969. His term lasted for four years following which the church in 1973 called Brian Wenham to be their pastor. After 43 years of faithful ministry Pastor Wenham retired in July 2016, at which time his long-time associate, Glenn Matthews, was appointed as Senior Pastor.

It was in 1984 that the Church was renamed Condell Park Bible Church. Our name emphasises our commitment to the Bible, and its central message: the good news about Jesus Christ.

More Recently

Over the past few decades, the Lord has blessed the Church in allowing it to expand its Gospel ministries both locally and further afield.

Condell Park Christian School was founded in 1979 and has faithfully provided Christian education for the leaders of tomorrow.

The ministry of the Condell Park Bible College has also been equipping pastors and Christian workers since its beginnings in 1991.

Condell Park Bible Church has been privileged to support Gospel ministry both locally and overseas. Support for local and interstate fellowships has been provided over the years in the establishment of the Auburn Bible Fellowship in the nearby suburb of Auburn in Sydney. This fellowship was very active amongst the large migrant population of that area since its establishment in December 2003.

Support for overseas missions is another blessing for our church. While missionaries from many countries have been encouraged over the years both financially and in prayer, most recently the church has been actively involved supporting Gospel ministry in India, Papua New Guinea, Syria and Fiji.

Many other ministries amongst youth, families and the local community have been nurtured over the years, and are a precious opportunity for us to serve our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He has saved us from our sin, and He can do the same for you!
